Inspirational Islanders: Natalie McAllister, Isle of Wight Roller Skaters

Self-confessed roller skating addict Natalie moved to the Island in 2016. Working as General Manager for Dyno-Rod IOW, she joined the Isle of Wight Roller Skaters in 2021. Nat and fellow Island skaters have secured places on a Portsmouth roller derby team – and although relatively in its infancy in the UK, she is an enthusiastic advocate for the fast-paced sport, looking to get as many people as possible hooked.

“The vast countryside of the Isle of Wight, and to be surrounded by the sea has always appealed to me as a great place to live. You can finish work and within a few minutes be skating along the seafront or exploring the rolling hills!

There’s also a great feeling of community here. I’ve always said I’ve been on a roll since my first pair of roller skates, but it’s great to be around like-minded people. Fast forward 40 years, add social media, a dedicated roller rink – Skates in Newport – and the result is a group of wonderful women ranging from 20 to 50 plus; all on the Island playing Roller Derby.

My favourite beach on the Island has got to be Cowes. I love skating along the Esplanade – the wide and (mostly!) level path make it ideal. Heading down after work and skating into the sunset is a great way to unwind and totally addictive!

If I haven’t got my skates on, I can usually be found on four hooves riding my horses around Mottistone or walking at St Catherine’s Oratory. Known locally as the Pepperpot, the views down over Chale and beyond to Freshwater are spectacular… and a drive along the Military Road is hard to beat whatever the weather.

The support from Wightlink is vital and their sponsorship allows us to travel across the Solent twice a week to skate with the Portsmouth Roller Wenches.”
