Originally from Wimbledon, Wendy has become well-known across the Isle of Wight for her litter-picking around the South Wight, earning herself the nickname ‘Womble Wendy’.
Along with partner Don and Pistache the dog, the Ventnor Wombles team are up at the crack of dawn in all weathers to help keep the seafront clean for locals and visitors alike.
“After annual holidays on the Isle of Wight from the age of three, I decided in my teens it was my ambition to live here. Great Uncle Bulgaria Coburg (leader of the Wimbledon Wombles) also agreed to send me here to set up and run Ventnor Wombles.
My favourite place on the Island has got to be The Undercliff from The Landslip to Blackgang Chine, but especially Windy Corner and Gore Cliff at Niton. It’s so peaceful along there and at one with the elements and nature.
There are so many Island events to choose from each year, but I always look forward to Chale Show, the Isle of Wight Festival and Wolverton Manor Garden Fair.
My earliest memories are from our holidays at Niton when I was a youngster and visiting Blackgang Chine. So much fun and laughter running around and exploring!
If I only had an hour on the Island, I would go to Ventnor Downs – the views of the town are fantastic from up there. I’d sit with a Mermaid Gin and elderflower tonic water and my thoughts.”
