Island skater heads to national championships

A talented young skateboarder from the Isle of Wight has been selected to compete in a national skateboard competition.
Martha Eggleton, aged 12, impressed the judges with her qualifying skate which was filmed at Canopy Skate Park on the Isle of Wight and submitted online.
She will now travel to The XC in Hemel Hempstead on 15 April to take part in the Skateboard GB National Championships in the ‘Park’ category.
Martha says: “I am really excited to have made it through to the national championships, it is a real honour to be taking part. We are lucky to have some great skate parks on the Isle of Wight where I can practice and learn new skills and tricks but I also have the support of Wightlink which allows me to visit the mainland frequently to experience different parks, particularly concrete parks which we don’t currently have here at the moment.”
Martha receives sponsorship from Wightlink via its Wightlink in the Community scheme. Phil Delaney, Wightlink’s Commercial Director said: “Wightlink has supported Martha since she was 8 years old and it has been a pleasure to see her progress within her sport – now competing at a national level and no doubt inspiring other young people, particularly girls, to get involved in this exciting sport. We wish Martha the best of luck at the national championships!”
While not practising her skateboarding, Martha – who attends The Island Free School – is also a keen hockey player. She plays for her school team as well as the Isle of Wight Hockey Club and has recently been invited to attend the Hampshire Hockey Development Centre.
